PRAIA DA ARRIFANA - Aljezur
A delightful beach with stupendous views
that is also considered to be reasonably safe for swimming. Take
the EN 124 coast road north from Lagos in the direction of Aljezur
and Lisbon. Just before reaching Aljezur take the turning left at
the sign marked “Arrifana”. On reaching Arrifana, you
will find the beach on your left at the bottom of a very steep narrow
road with little or no parking area at the bottom. This beach is
best visited out of season.
Praia da Bordeira - Carrapateria
Praia da Bordeira is located
on the west coast of the Algarve, north of the small town
Carrapateira, situated along the N-268 road leading from
Sagres to Aljezur via Vila de Bispo. This beach stretches
across 400 m of coast dunes. The brisk winds offer optimal
conditions for paragliding and windsurfers, but the beach
is not considered suitable for swimming and those with small
children should take care.
Praia da
Baleeira - Sagres
Situated overlooking Sagres Bay and its fishing harbor,
this is a small rocky beach. At times, local conditions
make it unsuitable for swimming, and are proximity to the
fishing harbor periodically affects water quality.
Praia do
Tonel - Sagres
Situated close to Sagres at the most western point of the
Algarve, Praia does Tonel offers good swimming. Popular
for wind-surfers owing to its exposure to westerly winds,
in summer it is supervised by experienced lifeguards as
the currents can pose some danger to inexperienced swimmers.
Accessible by turning right at the first roundabout in Sagres
and following the road to Cape St. Vincent.
Praia do
Martinhal - Sagres
Just prior to entering Sagres, in the far western Algarve,
and 8 km from Vila de Bispo on the EN 125, one will encounter
a turning to the left marked Praia do Martinhal. While surrounded
by dunes, swimming is only generally for the experienced
as the unprotected bay and local winds can make conditions
quite difficult at times. Ideal for surfing and windsurfing.
Praia do
Barranco - Raposeira
Somewhat isolated but worth the visit, this beach nestles
at the mouth of a stream between two cliffs. The water is
generally calm. Some facilities for visitors. Access is
via Raposeira and a 5 km dirt access road.

Praia Figueiras
- Figueiras
Praia Figueiras situated close to the village of Figuerias
on the road to Sagres, is an unspoilt, beautiful bay that
remains empty even in high season. This is mainly due to
the fact that one has to leave one’s car at the car
park behind the village and walk for about 15 minutes to
arrive at the beach. There are no facilities at this beach.
Praia dos
Três Irmãos - Alvor
This beach is representative of picture book Algarve, with
its flat sandy beach, fantastic yellow cliffs and clear,
turquoise waters. Several coves are connected to each other
by passageways through the cliffs and at low tide it is
even possible to can walk around the cliffs. Access to this
beach is via the the Torralta road from Alvor, although
one must watch carefully to see the small sign that points
left towards the beach with its car park and beach restaurant.
Praia do
Vau - Alvor
Praia do Vau is situated east of the town of Alvor, lying
half way between Portimão and Lagos. It lies in a
sheltered bay ideal for swimming. The sandy beach and calm
waters are ideal for families with children. There are kiosks
and restaurants catering for visitors although parking can
be difficult. Many famous Portuguese personalities frequent
this area.

Alvor - Alvor
Situated just below the picturesque holiday village of Alvor
in the western Algarve this wide 6 km long beach is ideal
for families and offers a variety of activities including
windsurfing and, snorkeling. The beach is easily accessible
from a variety of locations and there is sufficient parking.
Praia Senhora
da Rocha - Porches
Situated along the coast between the coastal resorts of
Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra lie several
small bays, some of which are only accessible by boat. Praia
Sra. Da Rocha is accessible by road via Porches, a village
lying on the EN 125. Signposts from Porches onwards indicate
the route to the beaches where there is a large car park
in front of the chapel. All the bays at Senhora da Rocha
are ideal for bathing and snorkeling. A tunnel leads to
Praia Nova, a long bay that is ideal for beach walks.
Praia de
Albandeira - Lagoa
Situated close to Armação de Pêra lies
one of the most remote beaches in the Western Algarve -
Praia de Albandeira. It is situated along one of the most
beautiful and, as yet, undeveloped sections of the Algarve
coastline. From the EN 215, near the International School
at Porches one follows the road to Benagil. After approx.
3,5 km, a dirt road to the left leads to a parking lot near
the beach. A rock overhang divides the cove in two, both
parts accessible only during low tide. The rock overhang
on the left part of the cove provides ample shade to sun-sensitive
bathers. A restaurant, which is only open during the main
holiday season, is located above the cove.

Praia da
Marinha - Lagoa
The picturesque beach, Praia da Marinha, lies on a small
bay situated between Carvoeiro and Armação
de Pêra. The beach is rarely overcrowded since it
is not easily accessible to residents of the surrounding
holiday complexes. One follows the EN 125 to the International
School of the Algarve near Porches and then a small road
leading of the right towards Lombos. Access to the beach
is via stairway where a small restaurant is open during
the main holiday season. The water is clear, but bathers
need to be careful of a few sharp-edged rocks in the water.
Praia Carvalho
- Carvoeiro
Lying to the west of the town of Carvoeiro, beyond the Club
Atlantico is Praia do Carvalho. This is a splendid sandy
beach set between cliffs. In order to reach the 60 m long
beach, one has to drive through a tunnel. The caves and
footpaths in the rock once served smugglers as hideouts.

Town beach - Carvoeiro
The town beach of Carvoeiro is one of the most picturesque
swimming beaches in southern Portugal and consequently is
well known with the result that in the summer months of
July and August, the barely 200 m long sandy beach is often
overcrowded with sun worshippers. A beach bar provides snacks
and refreshment.
Paraiso
beach - Carvoeiro
Set in a small bay to the west of the town of Carvoeiro
lies Paraiso Beach. Holidaymakers often only come here,
in summertime, when the town beach, which is much closer,
becomes hopelessly overcrowded. Steep steps lead down to
the beach. At high tide, the beach becomes quite narrow
while at low tide one needs to watch out for hidden rocks.
Armação
beach - Armação de Pêra
Running the length of the sea-front of the town of Armação
de Pêra a small seaside resort situated between Carvoeiro
and Albufeira is a 5 km long sandy beach which is ideal
for families. Accessible from either Porches or Alcantarilha
on the EN 125, the beach lies alongside a range of facilities
for visitors including cafes, restaurants, shops and other
leisure activities.
Praia da
Galé Albufeira
Praia da Galé, to the west of the holiday resort
of Albufeira begins where the steep coast behind the Ponta
do Castelo ends and runs for several km to the west where
it merges into the Praia de Armação de Pêra.
It is ideal for families and there is plenty of parking.
This beach rarely becomes crowded owing to its length. There
is a demarcated bathing zone to the west, so bathing here
with children is also no problem. Available activities include
water-skiing and windsurfing.

Castelo - Albufeira
Praia do Castelo beach is located approx. 8 km to the west
of the tourist resort of Albufeira. A short pathway leads
from the car park to the beach. The particularly fine, clean
sand in this protected bay is as popular with holidaymakers,
which can result in it being crowded in high season. There
is a car park nearby situated directly above the cliffs
as well as a restaurant.
Praia de
São Rafael - Albufeira
Situated 5 km from Albufeira this beach, even in summer,
remains mercifully free of the crowds that fill more popular
nearby beaches. Accessible via a small path this beach offers
a stunning panoramic view of the steep cliff lined coast.
There is a small restaurant on the beach.
Olhos de
Àgua - Olhos de Àgua
Lying below red rocky cliffs, pine trees and alongside a
former fishing village, east of Albufeira lies the small
sandy bay of Olhos de Agua. Restaurants and other facilities
lie nearby.
Praia da
Falésia - Vilamoura
Praia da Falésia is a 6 km sandy beach situated between
the towns of Albufeira and Quarteira. There is a car park
situated at the top of the cliffs overlooking the steps
leading down to the beach. A day on the Praia da Falésia
can seem almost lonely, even in August, as the bathers are
scattered over a wide area. There are several restaurants,
a playground for children and a variety of other leisure
facilities.

Marina - Vilamoura
Directly East of the Vilamoura marina there is an even,
coarse-grained and often crowded sandy beach that is popular
with families with small children. Breakwaters protect the
beach. There is a car park at the Vilamoura casino and opposite
the Ampalius Hotel. There are restaurants on the beach.
Quarteira
- Quarteira
Running the length of the seaside town of Quarteira and
onwards towards Vale de Lobo lies a long sandy beach. All
the part neighboring the town can in summer be overcrowded
the more isolated Eastern Section with rugged cliffs is
ideal for safe bathing.

Ilha do
Faro - Faro
Lying 6 km from the center of Faro and close to Faro Airport
is Faro island a popular holiday destination for many locals.
The island is only accessible via a narrow bridge which
summer makes access very difficult. However, the sandy beaches
on the south side of the island face the sea and offer safe
bathing for families. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants
and other facilities bordering the island.
Ilha de
Armona - Olhão
There is no beach along Olhão's coastline. However,
lying a couple of km offshore lies the Ilha de Armona, located
in the Ria Formosa National Park. Small ferries run hourly
between Olhão and Armona during the summer months.
The trip takes approx. 15 minutes. There is a large parking
lot next to Club Naval's boat landing stage. "Beach
boats" also run hourly from Fuzeta during the summer.
The island's dunes offer visitors a variety of large beaches,
public facilities, and there is also a small restaurant.
Finally there is also a camping ground on the island.
Praia do
Barril - Santa Luzia
The town of Santa Luzia, lying south of the city of Tavira
in the eastern Algarve does not possess its own proper swimming
beach owing to the sandbanks just offshore. However, a special
attraction awaits visitors just 500 m out of town: Here
is the departure point for a small train that takes the
visitor through the marshes of Ilha da Tavira to one of
the most beautiful beaches in the eastern Algarve, the Praia
do Barril. It is a wide and spacious beach where even nude
bathing has secretly established itself, something that
is generally not permissible in Portugal. There is also
a bridge that leads from the western end of Santa Luzia
to Praia do Barril. There is a small restaurant and sunshades
for rent. Diving and windsurfing facilities are also available.
Ilha de
Tavira - Tavira
Just offshore the old picturesque town of Tavira in the
eastern Algarve, lies the Ilha or Island of Tavira. In summer,
a ferry departs from the Rio Gilão riverbank behind
the market hall. The Praia das Cascas on the Ilha de Tavira
is approx. 200 m wide and stretches the length of the island.
Solitary spots can even be found in high season. There are
several restaurants on the islands, as well as a camping
site and a range of leisure activities.
Cabanas
- Cabanas
The town beach of Cabanas in the eastern Algarve starts
at the upper end of town alongside the foot of a slope entirely
covered with pines and cactus. The beach and water are suitable
even for small children. At low tide, visitors can take
the opportunity to cross over to the offshore sandbank sailing
mainly in small fishing boats.

Manta Rota - Monte Gordo
The beach at Praia de Manta Rota runs for 10 km along the
coast of the Eastern Algarve, starting 200m from the village
of Manta Rota - one of the newer vacation destinations in
the region. The beach is remarkably clean and has a playground.
It is ideal for long, leisurely walks, jogging and families.
Praia Verde
- Monte Gordo
Known locally as the "Green Beach" from the large
pine tree forest bordering the sand dunes, Praia Verde,
which runs for several km west from Monte Gordo is one of
the nicest beaches in the Algarve. It is a safe beach for
families and parking is available.

Gordo
The beach bordering the sea front at Monte Gordo is the
most easterly beach in the Algarve offering safe swimming.
The beach promenade at Monte Gordo offers a full range of
restaurants, bars and other facilities. There is plenty
of parking.
