The most South Westerly point of Europe, which from time immemorial until the end of the pre-christian period,was a point of worship to the setting sun and its deities. Abundant remains of pre-historic obelisks in the region testify to the fact, that even during the pre-Roman era, the area was a point of worship.

Next to the Museum of Lagos, the Igreja de Santo António is one of the town’s most remarkable ex-libris. The building was probably erected during the reign of João V, but was reconstructed after the 1755 earthquake by the commander of Lagos Infantry Regiment. It is perhaps due to this fact that the image of St. Anthony on the altar wears a military sash.

Installed in a building attached to the church of Santo António, The Lagos Museum was founded in 1934 on the initiative of its patron, Dr. José Formosinho. It has a Renaissance entrance door, which comes from the Church of the Maritime Compromise, and an iron door designed by local artists.
